Things to do When You’re Down with the Flu

I hope all of you are having an awesome week so far. So as I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I’m back in Karachi. I’m sorry I was away for a little while and I’ll just explain why. See…before travelling, I was a little bit sick like sneezing occasionally kind of sick. Once I got there, health situation aggravated a bit more with not-so-much sneezing but a runny nose and bad cough. Like really bad cough. (Ever wondered why our noses run and feet smell though? Sorry…I think this is just the after effect of the flu talking.)

And then the physical exertion that comes with travelling in general but the special kind that comes with travelling to Dubai (because well everything there is made for dinosaurs, you know…biggest mall, biggest gardens, biggest EVERYTHING. No wonder, people’s favourite choice of footwear seems to be running shoes) and to top it of you throw a cold shower into the mix and VOILA! You get a severely sick person all set to get a heavy dose of antibiotics.

So since that is out of the way and you now know what NOT TO DO to get sick or further aggravate your flu-like symptoms during this season; let’s get down to what you should do when you’re down with a flu.

A little disclaimer here: I’m not a doctor and I’m not saying any of the following things can replace a doctor’s diagnosis, recommended medicines and treatment but these are merely things that I do (other than the prescribed treatment) to help me feel better. Please consult with your doctor before trying out any of these things if you’re unsure about them. (Although, I do think it would be funny asking a doctor if one can watch Frozen while being sick. Teehee)

Cover your Basics

  • Wear a hoodie (preferably an over-sized one because…well…they’re the coziest).
  • Wear socks (preferably with stars with smiley faces on them because…why not?).
  • Stuff your pockets with an unlimited supply of tissues because of the waterworks (Don’t want to give TMI).
  • Get into bed with a ginormous blanket on top that just swallows you like a huge cloud (this forth point is crucial. DO NOT SKIP THIS. Along with the other three points of course).

Other than that a few more important things to do, that should be second nature in any case are washing hands frequently, keeping the mouth covered while sneezing or coughing, using disposable tissues for flu and disposing them off properly after use, etc. help keep others from getting sick. I know it’s easier said than done if there are kids around but taking necessary precautions make things so much easier in the long run when there’s only one person that needs tending to rather than four. (Ever heard of the Urdu saying, ‘aik anaar sou bemaar?’)

Take Lots of Rest

I had a ton of things to do when I was sick, which included laundry, unpacking, meal planning, laundry, cleaning, cooking and did I mention laundry? This is apart from all the blog related work that needs to be done. All the content I have in mind for all of you to read that needs to be typed out, photographed, tweaked, re-tweaked, edited, re-edited and completed with as much finesse as possible at the time. I was looking forward to get down to all of it even before coming back from holiday but the truth is I couldn’t. My mind kept telling me to do it but my body was just not fit for it because well…flu took all my strength it appears…

The guilt does creep up more often than not and it’s not a pleasant feeling at all but this body is also an amanah to Allah swt and we’re answerable to Him for how we treat ourselves and our bodies. Plus one can’t pour from an empty cup; in other words to be able to take care of things and others, it’s crucial to take care of one’s own self first. So it’s imperative to have a few days rest before you’re fully operational.

 

Keep Yourself Hydrated

I can’t stress enough on how important this point is! Have H2O everyone! Not just when you’re sick but specially when you’re sick and the whole year round as well! I don’t really feel like having as much water during winters as I do in summers but I consciously make an effort to keep myself hydrated. It’ll help flush the toxins out of your body and prevent that icky feeling of dry lips and skin that comes with dehydration.

Instead of having tea or coffee (that dehydrate the body) having honey with lemon juice in warm water is a great, comforting way to stay hydrated, build resistance from cold and flu, speed up healing if you do end up catching it and sooth a sore throat. As mentioned in the Qur’an also, honey is a cure for many diseases

Studies show that lemon juice helps reduce the intensity of cold and flu and also helps to loosen up congestion. Honestly, to me honey and lemon water is like a miracle drink and it really helped me recover a lot faster.

Take Steam

Ah…steam…there’s nothing quite like it to calm you down when you have cough, cold, flu and congestion! My mother in law taught me a neat tip to add cloves in the water you use to take steam. The idea is to add a few cloves in a pot of boiling water, take it off the stove, place towel over your head and slowly breathe in the steam like the image below. Take breaks in between if you feel overwhelmed.

Vicks Vaporub was my best friend during the time I was sick so I even added it once to the boiled water used for steam for instant relief. Here’s what I found on their website:

As medicated vapour to relieve nasal congestion. (For 6 years and above). Add 2 teaspoonfuls of Vicks VapoRub in a bowl of hot (not boilingwater and inhale
the vapours to clear blocked nose and ease breathing difficulties.

Do What You Love

Read a book, watch a movie (Frozen? I don’t know why I’m obsessed with it at the moment, I guess it’s just the season) or your favourite TV show, call a friend or a relative, be easy on yourself and do what you love. You will recover faster and get back on your feet in no time if you’re stress free and happy. 

Go Out in the Sun

Seriously, just go out for 10-15 minutes in the sun; if you can’t do that then try opening the window for some sunshine and the warmth of the sun will make you feel so much better, I promise. Sunshine has that effect on people, it just gives you that happy feeling, don’t you think?

  1. This flu season has been terrible. When I flew from KSA to USA, I brought with me a terrible cold (fever and everything) and gave it to my entire family. I coughed and snotted for 2 whole weeks! It was the worst 😦 Salamaat! and feel better 🙂
